About 490,000 people live in the 1,202 square miles that is Dane County. The county seat and also the Wisconsin State Capital are both in Madison. Other cities in Dane County include:

The University of Wisconsin main campus with about 40,000 students is located in Madison. Dane County is the second most populous county in Wisconsin, but it is also the most productive agricultural county in the state. This output is in corn, soybeans, milk and meat. Dodge County occupies 882 square miles and is home to about 89,000 Wisconsinites. The county seat is in Juneau. Other cities in the county include:

The vast Horicon National Wildlife Refuge is in Dodge County and is home to 268 species of bird, including ducks, cranes, herons and shore birds plus numerous marsh dwellers large and small. It is a favorite migratory stop in the fall for an estimated 100,000 to 300,000 Canada geese and other migrating birds. It is a favorite stop for over 400,000 travelers per year.
